One of the ideas I had to promote Knoxville Opera’s production of H.M.S. Pinafore was to have the cast “take over” the Star of Knoxville riverboat. As luck would have it, the singers were not available because the ship’s cruise schedule coincided with the opera’s rehearsal schedule. Fortunately, my friends at the opera came up with a solution.
Doug McKamey of the Knoxville Opera Guild dressed up as Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty, for a prime rib dinner cruise on the Star of Knoxville. He was accompanied by photographer Megan Clute and my friend Avi Viera, who recently joined Knoxville Opera as development director. WNOX account executive Cheri Brantley accompanied my wife and me.
This past week, I gave away opera tickets and dinner cruises to lucky listeners. Doug posed for photos with all the WNOX contest winners and also scaled a ladder to the wheelhouse for a picture with the riverboat’s real captain.
