Oldies, Goldies

A year ago today, my daughter got me all choked up with happiness. We were having a Google Hangout on my birthday. During the conversation she emailed me an MP3 and watched as I listened to it. The story actually starts almost 29 years ago.

When my daughter was born, I was the assistant promotion director at WAVA. I would also chime in on Don Geronimo’s afternoon show and I occasionally did an overnight shift or early Sunday morning shift, thanks to Tom Kent, who served as program director between Smokey Rivers and Mark St. John.

Naturally, I took the day off when my wife went into labor. When the baby arrived, I called our family members and then called the radio station. T.K. was on the air and he announced her birth over the intro to “Walk of Life” by Dire Straits.

Unbeknownst to me, my daughter emailed T.K. Tom Kent, who now has a very successful syndicated radio empire based in Cleveland. She asked if he had a tape of the announcement. He called her within minutes of receiving the email and said that there was no aircheck but that he remembered it like it was yesterday and would recreate the moment in his home studio. A very short time later, he emailed an MP3 file to my daughter, who saved it until my birthday to spring it on me. You can hear it by clicking on the play button below.
