The Classic Hits 93.1 WNOX 1st Birthday Party was held at Side Splitters Comedy Club on Sunday evening. The show consisted of performances by Terrence G., Einstein Simplified, John Upton and yours truly.
My wife took some nice photos with our camera, which I have posted below. Professional photographer Tonya Cinnamon was in the front row and got some funny close-ups, which can be found on the Cinnamon Studios Facebook page.
Bridgette Martin sent me a copy of the club’s emcee handbook, which spelled out the usual announcements to promote the club. It also said that the emcee can do several minutes of stand-up material. I had time to do most of the set I used in October during the Host with the Most Competition.
John Upton did a guest set of about seven minutes. He recently won the Metro Pulse Best of Knoxville award as favorite local comedian. Einstein Simplified did about forty-five minutes. I emceed the first couple of games but then got to play too. I was in “Animatronics,” “Deaf Jam” and “Phoning It In.”
Headliner Terrence G. closed the show with a strong set that included a mixture of the jokes he tells in the comedy clubs and the jokes he tells at church gigs. It was the right balance for our crowd.
When the idea for the birthday party was first proposed by the sales department, my immediate reaction was, “Can we have cake?” After the show, we served birthday cake from Sam’s Club and gave out door prizes. We also collected donations for the American Heart Association.
