Fox Valley of the Shadow of Death

Bodies decompose more slowly in the cold. So how do you establish the time since death of a murder victim in Appleton, Wisconsin, when most of the scientific data comes from Knoxville, Tennessee? You can estimate decomposition rates using “degree days” but there is a better way.

For years, Dr. Bill Bass has said that more body farms are needed around the country. The world’s seventh body farm is being created at Fox Valley Technical College in Wisconsin. The climate there will offer opportunities for new research that will help police solve crimes.
