A radio commercial for Trader Joe’s caused me to do a double take and then to laugh heartily. I heard the ad on WTOP.com the other morning. The announcer was suggesting a Valentine’s Day gift for a casual acquaintance. The gift? Dijon mustard.
I looked online to see if I could find the commercial. Instead I found a tweet from a Nickelodeon actress who was confused by the ad.
Heard a radio commercial on my way home & I'm pretty sure it said Trader Joes dijon mustard is the perfect gift… FOR VALENTINES DAY. (??!)

This must not be the first time Trader Joe’s has used sarcasm in their commercials. I also found a 2009 blog post from someone who didn’t get the joke when Trader Joe’s suggested handing out bags of flour on Halloween. An Olympic hopeful didn’t get the joke in 2013 when Trader Joe’s suggested giving turkey meatballs to trick-or-treaters.
Just heard a radio commercial from Trader Joe's suggesting to buy and hand out their frozen turkey meatballs on Halloween #WORSTIDEAEVER

A copy of Trader Joe’s newsletter arrived in the mail yesterday. I read through it, looking for an article about giving dijon mustard as a Valentine’s gift. Instead I found a funny article about their gluten-free greeting cards. I’m glad they haven’t lost their sense of humor.
