The Ladies Who Lunch

During the past year-and-a-half, Nancy and Sheila, two sisters who are retired librarians from Yonkers, have become my loyal pen pals. They knew me as a child and would suggest books for me to read.

In October, Nancy became president of the Ladies of Charity in the Archdiocese of New York. In that capacity, she will often attend events that are also attended by Cardinal Timothy Dolan.

On Wednesday, she presented two awards at the 68th Annual Cardinal’s Christmas Luncheon, held in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria. The event raised $1.5 million for Catholic Charities. That evening, Nancy sent me an email that read, “Cardinal Dolan recognized your name when I mentioned you to him and said how very, very much he enjoyed the Eucharistic gathering in Knoxville… seemed to truly enjoy it.”
