Memory Dredging

The littlest things can trigger our memories and send our thoughts in unexpected directions. Yesterday, I was  thinking about a costume to wear to the Hearth Scares Ball on October 25. A co-worker showed me a website that sells Halloween costumes based on CBS TV characters.

The online CBS store reminded me of the real store that I used to visit at the CBS Studio Center in Studio City, California. I liked to buy unusual Christmas gifts for my relatives back East. When I told the talkative sales clerk that I would be sending my purchases to the DC area, he told me that he was from suburban Maryland. He remembered me on subsequent visits and eventually offered to put me on the distribution list for his email newsletter, which evolved into a website. His name? Matt Drudge.
