Jilly’s Cupcake Bar made its third appearance on “Cupcake Wars” last month. My wife watched the episode before I did. She told me to pay close attention to Jilly’s first-round cupcake because she knew I would love seeing a Cuban coffee cupcake with espresso swirl icing. Chef Casey Shiller put pipetttes of coffee syrup with each cupcake for the judges to add as much or as little syrup as they liked.
The judges were wowed by all of Shiller’s entries. If we were allowed to see their scorecards, I think we would have seen that Jilly’s won by a landslide. It was the second time they won the top prize. They had something to prove after losing in a “Battle of the Champions” episode.
It’s been a year since I visited St. Louis and Jilly’s. On two of my previous visits, I got to talk to Casey about his TV appearances. Now I’m looking for an opportunity to get back there and do it again.
