Whan that Aprill

Several tragic events occurred on April 15 throughout history. Today we added an awful bombing at the Boston Marathon to the list.

As a youth, I read “The Day Lincoln Was Shot” by Jim Bishop and “A Night to Remember” by Walter Lord. The two books are the reason I know that April 15 is the date of Lincoln’s death in 1865 and of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

Grandma at her 95th birthday party in 2008 In my family, April 15 was a special day for joyous reasons. Today would have been my grandmother’s 100th birthday. She lived to be 98.

While looking up the historical events of the day, I noticed that today is also the death anniversary of Saint Damien of Molokai. When several of our family members traveled to Molokai in the 1990s, Grandma urged us to visit a relic of the saint before our flight home.
