The Walking Led

The weather was perfect for the 15th annual Kids Helping Kids Fun Walk on Sunday. The Walk is a fundraiser for Columbus Home Children’s Services, a program of Catholic Charities of East Tennessee. I was the honorary chairman for the event again this year.

Actual chairman Carroll McMahan and the committee added a few new flourishes this year. They gave prizes to all the top fundraisers instead of just the first place winner. They also invited local mascots to participate, such as those from Wendy’s, Shoney’s and the Bloomin’ Barbeque and Bluegrass festival. It was my idea to also include mascots from St. John Neumann School and Sacred Heart Cathedral School.

The Drake School of Irish Dance staged a performance, as did comedian/magician Danny Whitson, whom I met at open-mic night at Side Splitters Comedy Club. Speaking of the comedy club, I made time in the program for a ceremonial check presentation from Bridgette Martin of Side Splitters. The giant check represented the $2,043 I won for Columbus Home in the Host with the Most Competition last year.
