An interesting piece of Knoxville trivia is that Hank Williams either died in the Andrew Johnson Hotel or died in the car on his way out of town on New Year’s Eve 1952. He was honored with a “Hank Days Festival” in the Old City.
Classical composer Sergei Rachmaninoff is honored with the a statue on the grounds of World’s Fair Park in Knoxville. His final concert was on February 17, 1943 in Knoxville, 39 days before his death.
Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist Randy Rhoads died in a plane crash in Florida on March 19, 1982, the morning after performing in Knoxville. His story is particularly interesting to me because my wife and I knew Randy’s sister Kathy as a fellow parishioner at St. Finbar Church in Burbank.
It’s time to add another name to the list. Country singer George Jones gave his last concert on April 6, 2013 at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Jones died yesterday at age 81. He had 27 more stops planned on his farewell tour, which was supposed to end in November.
