The subjects of the most recent broadcasts of “Your Stories” are connected by a parking lot. Last Wednesday, Abby Ham featured Judge Tim Irwin on “Your Stories.” Yesterday, she repeated a November 2010 profile of my friend Fr. Ragan Schriver, executive director of Catholic Charities of East Tennessee.
Judge Irwin presides over Knox County Juvenile Court. He often must order children to be removed from abusive situations. Rather than immediately put them in state’s custody, he has the option to send them across the parking lot to the safety of Columbus Home, one of the programs of Catholic Charities. Irwin played football for UT and for the Minnesota Vikings. He’s also a member of a rock band called The Chillbillies.
This is a busy time of year for Catholic Charities. Their annual dinners in Tri-Cities, Knoxville and Chattanooga are this month. The 15th annual Kids Helping Kids Fun Walk will be held on April 21. Proceeds from the Kids Walk benefit Columbus Home.
The staff at Catholic Charities asked me to serve as honorary chair of the Kids Helping Kids Fun Walk again this year. In the days ahead, I will shoot a video PSA for the walk. At this year’s Walk, we’ll present a ceremonial check with my winnings from the Host with the Most Competition at Side Splitters.
