Technology has allowed me to enjoy my favorite Christmas recording in new ways this year. Now that I have a smart phone, I can use it to listen to “A Christmas Festival” on Google Play Music or the Amazon MP3 app. Both are capable of playing the files on my memory card.
I can also find several versions of the medley on YouTube. The one that intrigued me most was a copy of the 78 rpm record by Leroy Anderson and his Pops Concert Orchestra. YouTube user MusicProf78 wrote: “At the request of Boston Pops conductor Arthur Fiedler, Dr. Anderson arranged this famous piece consisting of nine familiar Christmas melodies. This first recorded version by Anderson was released over two sides of a single 78 rpm and 45 rpm record in time for the 1952 holiday season.”
