Pomegranates are one of my favorite foods. I try to be meticulous about opening them without bursting too many of the arils. The best technique I’ve found so far is to put the pomegranate under water before ripping it apart. I use a large bowl and lukewarm water.
A plastic gadget called the pomegranate deseeder caught my eye at the store. It was priced the same as one pomegranate. I was skeptical because I could only imagine that you would lose a significant number of arils when you mash the pomegranate down onto the deseeder.
A couple of videos seem to support my theory. If you look closely at the end of the official demonstration, you can see a pool of red juice as the demonstrator tilts the dark plate. In a another, less-professional video, the product tester dumps the arils, membranes and juice into a bowl of water. The water immediately turns red.
