Bridgette and Coley O’Dell had to ask several times before I said yes. Last year, they asked me to participate in the Host with the Most Competition at Side Splitters Comedy Club. Several local media personalities did stand-up comedy to benefit the charities of their choice. I declined because as an improviser, my style of comedy is the opposite of stand-up. I did attend the show to support some friends who were performing.
On Sunday, I was at a photo shoot with some of my fellow Einstein Simplified members and some comedians who regularly perform at Side Splitters. Coley asked me again to do Host with the Most. Paul Simmons had me flip a coin and do a gut check to see how I really felt about performing. With their encouragement, I decided to do it. I’ve got two months to prepare a six-minute stand-up set.
When I first got the invitation for this year’s contest, I thought about the charity aspect. I have served as honorary chair of the Kids Helping Kids Fun Walk to benefit Columbus Home since 2010. I was recently appointed to the Knoxville Community Advisory Council of Catholic Charities of East Tennessee. If I joined the competition, I could raise some money for Columbus Home Children’s Emergency Shelter.
There are three ways I can earn money for the shelter. They will get a small amount just for my participation. The comedian who sells the most tickets gets a bonus for his or her charity. The comedian who gets the most votes from the live audience gets 90% of the ticket proceeds for his or her good cause.
The Host with the Most Competition is Sunday, October 21 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets go on sale on Monday, September 3 (Labor Day) at 10:00 a.m. They cost $15 but if you use the promo code “FM,” the price drops to $10 and I get credit for the sale. You have to be 18 or over to attend. As always, there is a two-item minimum purchase per person in the showroom during the event.
Save the date and make plans to laugh with us on October 21!
