“BBQ Pitmasters” seems to be on every time I flip past a new cable channel called Destination America. I can relate to the cooking competition on that show much more easily than any of the gourmet cooking shows my wife watches. While we are no experts, my wife and I can successfully cook ribs, pork shoulder and chicken on our smoker. The key is regulating the fire to maintain the cooking temperature.
The channel’s website had a list of the Top 10 Most Unbelievable State Fair Foods. One of them sounded downright reasonable to me. I imagine that a Pork Parfait could be served in moderately sized portions. I would use a smaller cup than the fair vendors and I would put coleslaw on top of the layered pork BBQ and mashed potatoes.
I also found links to several videos recorded on July 4th at Coney Island. Destination America teamed up with Major League Eating to sponsor an “apple pie dive” as a warm-up to the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. To me, it looked like the contestants jumped into a swimming pool full of foam triangles. They had spooned several cans worth of apple pie filling on top of the foam. The contestants had to fish out a token of some sort, with one person being eliminated in each round. Some of the contestants were Mookie Wilson, Greg Louganis and Myron Mixon.
