The Relay for Life of Metro Knoxville took on a special significance for my wife and me. Friday night’s event was exactly a month after her brother died of cancer. She purchased a luminaria and decorated it in his memory. They needed more volunteers, so she helped place all the bags around the track and then went back to light the candles after dark.
The co-chairs for the downtown Relay were Greg Huff of Einstein Simplified and Bill Evans of WATE. Bill is also vice-president of the FBI Knoxville Citizens Academy Alumni Association. Several months ago they asked me to serve as co-emcee with Lori Tucker of WATE. Greg is a longtime supporter of the American Cancer Society. His Relay team is called the Improv Ninjas. They sell ninja dolls to raise funds for ACS.
I had a nice visit with Sammy Sawyer, who does an amazing job as a Barney Fife impersonator. I promised to send him the links to my blog posts that mention him. I also enjoyed socializing with a group of Starbucks baristas. I promised I would say hi to Blair, Nicole, Tarah, Curtis and Robyn when I see them working at one of the Starbucks near me.
As we passed the Knoxville Museum of Art on our way to our car, my wife and I happened to see a woman named Lori and her husband Clark. They were making a late-night Gigi’s Cupcakes delivery to their team, Vandelay Industries. They set the boxes down on the sidewalk to let us see what they had. The money we spent on a delicious lemon cupcake went to a great cause.
