The cupcakes were almost gone by the time I got to the box, which made me happy. Members of the FBI Knoxville Citizens Academy Alumni Association and their guests were enjoying the delicious mini-cupcakes that were donated by Scrumps Cupcakes in Fountain City. The idea to contact Scrumps came to me after I chose the location for last night’s meeting.
I already knew that the speaker would be Dr. Bill Bass, founder of the Body Farm. He agreed to speak to the group and to sign copies of the latest Jefferson Bass novel, “The Inquisitor’s Key.” I needed a place that could hold 50 people and would be willing to waive their rental charge as an in-kind donation to the Association. A news story about funeral homes being used for weddings and other events gave me the answer.
In January, I interviewed Eric Botts, the manager of Gentry-Griffey Funeral Chapel. I sent him a Facebook message asking for a meeting space and he quickly agreed. Given that the meeting would be at a funeral home in Fountain City and that Dr. Bass would speak about the exhumation of the Big Bopper, it seemed perfectly natural to ask Kathleen Robinson of Scrumps to whip up some Death by Chocolate cupcakes.
