Last night at the Tennessee Valley Fair, the hunt was on. I didn’t have to look far. One of the first vender booths I saw belonged to Denton Family Foods. I put my $3 on the counter and watched as a man named Augustus dipped a chunk of frozen banana pudding into batter and then into the hot oil.
I handed a video camera to my colleague Colin Marcum to capture the moment. As you’ll see, Augustus told me about the upcoming Banana Pudding Festival in Centerville, Tennessee. He also insisted that I speak with Doc Denton himself, who was sitting nearby with Kevin McGrath, the owner of a booth called The Best Around. Doc said that it was Kevin who inspired him to find new things to fry. Tomorrow I’ll post photos of the Red Velvet Funnel Cake being served at Kevin’s booth.
