Gravitational Pull

St. Louis is a food town. If I ate everything I wanted to eat there, I would be as big as the Gateway Arch. When my wife and I visit, we want to return to our favorite restaurants and buy some gooey butter cake to take home. I also want to try new places, such as the ones I saw on “Man v. Food” or more recently on “Cupcake Wars.”

Jilly’s Cupcake Bar was the winner of an episode called “The Final Frontier.” They made cupcakes to honor the 50th anniversary of U.S. Spaceflight. One of their creations is made with banana-toffee cake as a nod to Ham and Enos. I wish the Post-Dispatch hadn’t put it into my head that it has over 800 calories.

Chef Casey Shiller had me rooting for his team throughout the entire episode. Like me, he is a fan of the space program. I loved the way he used “tangerine space drink” a/k/a Tang in one of the recipes. When I was a kid, I had a poster with pictures of all the Apollo astronauts. I’m planning a visit to Jilly’s on my next trip to St. Louis to try one of the winning cupcakes.
