The article I was reading was about approaching celebrities in public. Its importance waned when I got to a quote from travel psychologist Michael Brein and I thought, “there’s such a thing as travel psychology?”
Brein has identified over 200 themes that occur in the stories he hears from travelers. I skimmed through the list and couldn’t figure out which theme best explained my completist desire to visit all 50 states. The six essays on his website may provide more insight. In “Travel Psychology 101,” Brein starts by describing travel as a way to elevate self-esteem and as an achievement of higher-order needs. I have some reading to do.
